SOLUTION FOR ADVANCED PRODUCTION
In this article, we argue the notion of "Range of comfortable color perception" in making vfx. Moreover, will explain why objects that outside of this range are in resonance of perception and on the real examples show the law in action.
Wrong color correction or color of the light source can deteriorate an even perfect image. We often see it in our life, when watching TV shows, cg art works and even films. All of these are similar in one. Some of the vfx are not corresponding to the spectrum of light, of convenient color perception. Even well-made the frame will not be looked lifelike if cg objects or the environment do not arrange in the range of comfortable color perception. "Range of comfortable color perception" combines two notions: 1) Nature of light 2) Eyes physiology
NATURE OF LIGHT
In Harvard classification, our sun has a type G2V (yellow dwarf). The temperature of the sun's surface 6000K. By a result of photometry sun color classified as a yellow.
However, in fact (in the space) we can see a color like white gold. Hottest stars have a blue color.
Here on the earth we see yellow color of the sun. The optical structure of the human eyes and our atmosphere (N2-78%, O2 -20, 9-% and other) is a key aspect in our perception of colors. Atmosphere scatters rays of the sun in a numerous wavelength span. Lightwave falling on the ground with minimal scattering in the sky has a warm spectral length. However, a wave of light with a cold, spectral wavelength scattered in upper-atmosphere layers and we see a blue reflected color in our sky. That is a physical effect described in Rayleigh–Jeans law.
In terms of physiology, warm and cool colors are different to us only by the wavelength. On one end of the spectrum - the bluish-violet - short wavelength (400-500 NM), but longer wavelength (600-800 NM) is a red and orange color on the other side of the spectrum. Color with large wavelength - red, orange - seems to us warm. Color with a shorter wavelength for us is cold (purple, blue).
The eye is most sensitive to green rays, the least - to blue. Established experimentally that the yellow-greenish light with a wavelength of 555 NM has the greatest sense of light is monochromatic.
